Flying a DJI Agras Drone: The Rules in the Benelux

Using a DJI Agras agricultural drone brings huge benefits for precision farming. However, because these drones are large and powerful, they fall under the ‘Specific Category’ within European drone regulations (EASA). This means that additional steps are required before you can fly legally.

What is the Specific Category?

The Specific Category applies to drones that weigh more than 25 kg, or for operations where the standard ‘Open Category’ rules are not sufficient. For DJI Agras models, this means you need an operational authorization from the aviation authority (Netherlands: ILT, Belgium: DGLV, Luxembourg: DAC).

What do you need to fly legally?

To operate an Agras drone, you will need:

  • Operator registration
  • Theoretical and practical pilot training (A1/A3, A2 and additional requirements.
  • An Operational Manual including a SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment)
  • Approval from the aviation authority
  • Drone liability insurance
  • Compliance with local airspace rules and restrictions
